Veterinarians/Externs - Roundup

Needed:  Two, Full time, mixed practice veterinarians.

Location:  Roundup, MT is located in mid-eastern Montana.  This is still very much cattle/ranch country, at the edge of the Bull Mountains.   We are located 45 miles north of Billings, which is one of the larger cities in Montana.  Billings sports an international airport, (I don’t really believe they send planes out of our country….)  BUT there are theaters, shopping, fast foods, concerts, etc.    The nearest ski hill is just south of Red Lodge, which is just south of Billings.  We are about 3 hours and 15 minutes from Yellowstone.  Roundup has an airport too, with two paved strips!

Ours is a quiet little town, with a very new elementary school, and fairly new high school.  We have several churches, two grocery stores, two gas stations and one blinking stop light.  Of course, we have stop signs…...  But….  There isn’t any fast food, bus service, taxi or even Uber….  I guess this town isn’t for everyone….  But those of us that are here, love it.  Oh yes, there are some bars and restaurants, so after a hard day, you won’t have to cook.  And Schwann’s….

Practice type:  Our practice is 50/50 large/small animal, but this varies with the time of year.  Spring is busy with cattle obstetrics and bull testing while fall is preg checking bang’s and health certificates for interstate travel.  Early to mid-summer seems to be horse wire-cut season, mare breeding, etc.  Small animal work is sprinkled in throughout the year with rattlesnake (all species), dog fight tears, spays and neuters.  We try to adjust for the weather.  This can sometimes be uncomfortable, which means, we turn it into a small animal day!  We have our own EIA lab, digital radiology, blood machines, ultra sounds, phantoms and AV’s, portable Silencer chute, portable radiology, mobile vet unit, Sevo/Iso anesthesia, Dental scaler/polisher, and use Avimark software.   We board and are the “pound” for two counties.

Compensation:  Pay will be based on experience and productivity.  There is opportunity to buy into the practice or heck, buy it all….

Atmosphere:  We work in a friendly, laid back environment, however, we work very hard!  We try to bring quality service to the rural community.  We refer specialty procedures and surgeries, such as bone plating or MRI’s, etc., however, if this is something you could bring to our community, we would welcome it!  I do have friends that are willing to teach these skills, if that is your desire.

Externs:  We take externs most of the year.  This year, we are hoping to keep a couple of you!  If working with us in this type of world is something that might fit your personality and passion, please feel free to call or text me.   Yes, we have internet, running water and flushing toilets….

Full-time Mixed Animal Veterinarian - Miles City

There is an opening currently available for a full-time mixed animal veterinarian in Miles City, MT.  The practice is 50% food animal, 40% small animal and 10% equine.  Currently there are 3 full-time and one part-time veterinarians.  The part-time veterinarian is leaving this summer.

Our large animal practice is based on cow-calf production and includes three counties in eastern MT.  A clinic vehicle, Silencer chute, Ibex ultrasound, and Pulsator IV ejaculators are available for herd work.  The majority of individual animal assessments including obstetrical procedures are brought into the clinic.  The local salebarn is also served here, as are a number of smaller backgrounding lots (500-4000 head).

The small animal portion includes gas anesthesia, in-house CBC and chemistry units, digital radiography, ultrasonic scaler and Dentalaire cart for dental procedures.  We do soft tissue surgery and some basic orthopedic procedures including lateral suture repair for cruciate tears and also bone pinning and plating.  There is also a small amount of small animal boarding.

Equine services include routine and cryptorchid castrations, umbilical hernia repair, teeth floating, basic lameness exams and basic reproductive services.   Surgical colic cases are referred to Billings, which is about two hours away.

All areas of practice are active but open to expansion of services.

Clinic hours are 9:00 am to 5:30 pm (closed over the noon hour) daily M-F and Saturday from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm.  On-call hours are currently split between three veterinarians, with the on-call vet working the Saturday hours.

Salary is negotiable.  Liability insurance paid.  Two weeks paid vacation.  State VMA dues, AVMA dues and one professional membership paid.  Also, the clinic will pay for CE registration fees and lodging for meetings.

Miles City is a community of approximately 8,500 people and is an economic and social hub of eastern MT.  There are plenty of local groups to be involved in, whether music, theater, athletics or western heritage.  Hunting and fishing opportunities are present here in Custer County.  For those who enjoy mountain activities such as skiing, hiking or fly fishing, the mountains of MT are about a three-hour drive.

New graduates are certainly welcome to apply.  We are looking for a versatile person who is open to exploring their own pursuits in a general small-town veterinary practice.
